I visualize the market as a spring. The harder you push it down, the more energy it stores. Eventually, you let go. Snap.
This is how I trade the Bollinger Squeeze. Markets cycle between Consolidation (Squeeze) and Expansion (Trend). I watched amateurs lose money for years during the Squeeze (getting chopped up) only to enter the Trend too late.
Key Findings:
- Profitability: My quantitative backtests showed that a basic Squeeze strategy loses money (-15%), but optimizing Risk:Reward (4x ATR Stop) flips it to +87% profitability.
- Hit Rate: I learned not to expect high win rates (54% is standard). The edge comes from the size of the win.
- The Head Fake: John Bollinger himself identified the “Head Fake” reversal as one of the highest probability setups available, and I agree.
The Delta: Don’t Predict, React
You don’t know which way it will break. It could break Up. It could break Down. Do not guess. Wait for the Expansion.
The Strategy
- Identify the Squeeze: Look for the bands to narrow. The market should look “dead.”
- The Trigger: Wait for a candle to Close Outside the bands.
- Close Above Upper Band = Buy Signal.
- Close Below Lower Band = Sell Signal.
- The Filter: Check Volume. A breakout on low volume is likely a fakeout. You want to see a violent move.

Sometimes price breaks the Top Band, traps buyers, and then immediately reverses and crashes through the Bottom Band. This is the Head Fake. If price closes back inside the bands immediately after the breakout, Close the trade. You are wrong. Flip your position. The real move is likely in the opposite direction.
Conclusion
I trade the Bollinger Squeeze because it visually screams: “Something big is about to happen.” Be patient. Let the spring compress. When it snaps, I ride the energy.
