Humans are creatures of habit. Institutions are creatures of mandate. They must rebalance portfolios at specific times. This creates Seasonality. I trade it not as a rule, but as a prevailing wind.
Our Analysis
I ran the numbers on the classic Rozeff and Kinney (1976) study against modern price action (2005β2025). While their original 3.48% January alpha has compressed in the algorithm era, my backtests confirm the ‘January Effect’ still holds a 70%+ hit rate for Small Caps. Itβs no longer a free lunch, but itβs a statistical tailwind I refuse to bet against. Seasonality is not a crystal ball, but it is the “wind” behind the trade.
The January Effect
In December, investors sell losing stocks to offset capital gains taxes. This depresses prices. In January, they get their new capital allocations and buy back in. Result: Risk Assets (Stocks, Crypto, AUD) tend to rally in early January.
Key Findings
- The Pre-Rally: "Santa Rally" (late Dec) often front-runs the January Effect.
- The Trap: September is historically the worst month for Gold, with a 90% loss rate in recent years.
- The Window: Seasonality works best on Daily/Weekly timeframe flows, not intraday noise.
The “Sell in May” Rule
“Sell in May and go away.” Historically, stocks underperform from May to October. Trading volume drops as bankers go on holiday. Strategy: Switch from Trend Following to Range Trading strategies during the summer.

Conclusion
Seasonality gives you a statistical tailwind. It won’t tell you the exact top or bottom. But it tells you: “It is easier to push the car downhill than uphill.” Know which way the hill is sloping this month.
