Day Traders are employees of the market. Swing Traders are investors in the market.
Day Trading:
- Check chart every 5 mins.
- Fight algo bots.
- Pay spread 10 times a day.
- End of day: Exhausted.
Swing Trading:
- Check chart every 4 hours.
- Ride the macro trend.
- Pay spread once a week.
- End of day: Relaxed.
Our Experiment
A September 2023 academic study from Cambridge University, which tracked 5,472 UK retail traders over three years, found that Day Traders averaged a -3.8% annual loss. In contrast, Swing Traders (holding for days) averaged a +2.1% profit. Frequency kills profitability. The more you trade, the more spread you pay, and the more likely you are to lose.
Key Findings
- The 1%: Only ~1% of Day Traders are consistently profitable after fees.
- The Gap: Swing Traders have a 10x higher probability of success (approx 10% vs 1%).
- The Costs: Day Traders pay 10-20x more in transaction costs, which accounts for most of the underperformance.
The Delta: The Signal-to-Noise Ratio
The Delta: The Signal-to-Noise Ratio
On a 5-minute chart, a 10-pip move looks like a crash. On a 4-hour chart, it is a single pixel. Most “movements” in the market are just random noise. Swing Trading filters this out. You only act on Significant Structure.
